Hello, I am pretty new to looming, so new I still find myself dragging out my books I bought to remember what stitch is what and how to do certain things, lol my question is what is the best sock pattern for a newbie to learn on and what is the best yarn to use for socks, as I would want something thin to be able to wear them with shoes, Thanks so much in advance for any help! Seems to me that the yarn labeled "sock yarn" would work best since its sort of stretchy and thin so the sock wont be too bulky for your normal everyday shoes. Im trying to save up some money to buy myself a sock loom (probably one from DALooms. )

I was thinking sock yarn as well. Although if you are using a KK loom it may not turn out right. The gauge is probably too big on the KK's. I am looking for a sock loom as well and am leaning towards DA.

I have just go an e-mail from DALOOMS to tell me my sock loom is on its way hope the post is not to long can't wait to try it out after hearing so much about it. All my son can say is not another loom you can only use one at a time haven't you got all the wool you can use in your life time He should talk with all the computers and bits he's got but he will still buy more.

Thanks to all for the input, I do plan on getting an EFG loom from DA. As for the sock yarn, I am aware that I need to use "sock" yarn, I just didnt know if one particular brand was better than the other as far as holding its shape and stretchiness. Instead of using one that would be too thick for shoes. Anyone know of a good pattern to start with learning socks? Thanks all, Lori

The sock yarn is very thin. It's best worked up on an extra fine gauge or needles unless you use a couple of strands from what I can gather. I am about halfway through my very first extra fine gauge sock and am very excited. I've got DA's WonderSock.

LJcatfeather, that is the same loom I am considering ordering from DA, Would love to see your pics when finished! I am very eager to learn socks myself, but I think I will try a pair of slippers on the blue KK before moving to socks so that maybe I will have the basics on them down first, Lori

I have been doing weekends socks on the blue kk and find them very easy, and I can do baby booties with needles knitting and have no trouble. I am hoping that my wonderloom will be just as easy to work on.

Hi Dotty, do you mind if I ask what pattern you use for the socks on the blue kk? I have bought a 64 peg da loom today so awaiting its arrival, I will also prob be ordering the EFG loom as well, I have never tried needle knitting, I would prob be all thumbs there, lol

The KISS loom is also very good. They have an EFG sock loom as well. I have projects, most in progress still, on the DA WondeSock, and the regular adjustable gauge KISS pictured on my blog. www.catfeatherz.com As for patterns, it depends on what type of sock you want. The free Schooner Sock pattern on DA looms is very easy and there are several You tubes that give the basic knit and purl instructions. The only "new" stitch to the mix is a slip stitch which is just skipping totally around the back of the peg with your yarn and working the next peg as normal. SO easy and yet looks very cool. The next easiest one I found was also Isela's and is her pom pom sock, also located at DA Looms. Don't under-estimate that KISS sock loom or any of the KISS looms though. You can't beat them for making you look good! My KISS stuff makes it look like I know what I'm doing!

I'm working on my second pair of socks. I just received my EFG Wonder Sock Loom last week and am working on a pair of schooner socks. It took a bit to get used to the loom, but I am adjusting and gaining speed each day. Can't wait to get further along so I can really see the pattern. My first pair was made with a fg loom, the pattern was Toe Up Socks. It was pretty easy and a good one to start with.
